What cacti sell the best in today’s market?

Cacti and succulents have become hugely popular in recent years. Many rare, strange, and unique cultivars are fetching very high prices on the house plant market. On websites like Etsy, many sellers are offering never-before-seen strains of cacti, that are created by very disciplined breeding practices.

Two mutations that cacti can have, that can instantly increase their value, are known as being Crested, or Variegated.

Cresting (latin word, cristata), is a phenomenon where instead of the plant growing normally, nodule by nodule, multiple growth points appear from one nodule. An example picture of a crested Cactus is below:

Some examples of some notable species of cactus that are popular on the market, and fetch a high price are:

Gymnocalycium
Astrophytum Asteria
Lophophora Williamsi
Trichocereus sp.
Echinopsis sp.

Many cacti are popular due to their alkaloid content, and usefulness in traditional medicines. Other cacti are popular simply because of their natural beauty, and cool coloring patterns. Others, are so ridiculously difficult to grow, they fetch a high price on that basis alone. In general, if it takes a long time to cultivate that particular species, and it also has some desirable and marketable traits like good coloring, it’s almost a guarantee that species of cactus will fetch a high price on the market.

In conclusion, look for cacti that have the following qualities:

– Rare, or otherwise difficult to obtain
– Desirable coloring and patterns
– Variegation
– Pick popular species people are already aware of
– Cactus which are difficult to grow

The more of these qualities they have, the higher value they can fetch on the online cactus market.
